The amazing bebop piano geniusĀ Bud PowellĀ made his most enduring recordings as a leader for Blue Note and was a catalyst for moving the label from the hot jazz it was founded on into the modern music being made by Powell,Ā TheloniousĀ Monk,Ā FatsĀ Navarro, and others. Powellās 1949 & 1951 quintet & trio sessions were first released in 1952 as the 10ā LPĀ The Amazing Bud Powell, and later expanded asĀ The Amazing Bud Powell, Vol. 1Ā (BLP 1503) when Blue Note moved to the 12ā LP and launched the 1500 series in 1955. The quintet date featured the pianist with the likes of trumpeterĀ Fats Navarro, tenor saxophonistĀ Sonny Rollins, bassistĀ Tommy Potter, and drummerĀ Roy HaynesĀ performing Powell originals such as āDance of the Infidels,ā āWail,ā and āBouncing with Bud.ā The trio date featured bassistĀ Curly RussellĀ and drummerĀ Max RoachĀ joining Powell on the jaunty classic āUn Poco Loco,ā presented here in three evolving takes, along with timeless versions of Powellās āParisian Thoroughfareā andĀ Dizzy Gillespieās āA Night In Tunisia,ā as well as showstopping solo piano performance of āIt Could Happen To You.ā
