The Story

Tenor saxophonistĀ Hank MobleyĀ had already been building a formidable Blue Note catalog for more than a decade when he conceived of his unique albumĀ A Slice of the Top, which was recorded in 1966 but not first released until 1979 as part of the LT Series. Inspired byĀ Miles Davis’ Birth of the Cool, Mobley collaborated withĀ Duke PearsonĀ who arranged four Mobley originals and the pop standard ā€œThere’s a Lull In My Lifeā€ for an octet that addedĀ Kiane Zawadi’s euphonium andĀ Howard Johnson’s tuba to a group consisting ofĀ James SpauldingĀ on alto saxophone and flute,Ā Lee MorganĀ on trumpet,Ā McCoy TynerĀ on piano,Ā Bob CranshawĀ on bass, andĀ Billy HigginsĀ on drums. Behold Mobley’s lyrical flights on standout tunes including ā€œHank’s Other Bag,ā€ ā€œA Touch of Blue,ā€ and ā€œA Slice of the Top.ā€
