Following the release of his 1965 masterpieceĀ Maiden Voyage, the brilliant pianistĀ Herbie HancockĀ wouldnāt record his Blue Note follow-up until 1968 with the innovative classicĀ Speak Like A Child. The album was a showcase of several aspects ofĀ Hancockās artistry: as a pianist, a composer, and an arranger. The session foundĀ HancockĀ expanding his tonal palette by adding the unique coloring of flugelhorn (Thad Jones), bass trombone (Peter Phillips), and alto flute (Jerry Dodgion) to his trio with bassistĀ Ron CarterĀ and drummerĀ Mickey Roker. However, the leaderās piano would be spotlighted as the main solo instrument throughout this six-song set includingĀ HancockĀ originals like the alluring title track, the churning āRiot,ā the plaintive āGoodbye to Childhood,ā and the mysterious closer āThe Sorcerer,ā a dedication toĀ Miles DavisĀ which had been recorded by the trumpeterās quintet the year prior. OnĀ Carterās spry and cheerful āFirst Tripā the trio goes it alone delivering a wonderfully agile and swinging performance for the ages.
