
The Story
TrombonistĀ J. J. JohnsonĀ took the language of bebop and adapted it to his instrument winning the admiration of Fats Navarro, Dizzy Gillespie, and CharlieĀ Parker. After appearing on Miles Davisā first Blue Note session in 1952, Johnson was given the chance to lead his own dates in 1953 and 1954. The first featured a sextet with Johnson joined by the brilliant trumpeterĀ Clifford Brown, saxophonistĀ Jimmy Heath, pianistĀ John Lewis, bassistĀ Percy Heath, and drummerĀ Kenny ClarkeĀ who perform a varied program with up-tempo burners like āTurnpikeā and beautiful ballads like āLover Man.ā For his next session Johnson went back into Van Gelder Studio to cut memorable takes of āOld Devil Moon,ā the percolating original āCoffee Pot,ā and more with a quintet featuringĀ Wynton KellyĀ on piano,Ā Charles MingusĀ on bass, Clarke once again on drums, and the congueroĀ Sabu Martinez. The two sessions were later combined for the release ofĀ The Eminent Jay Jay Johnson, Volume 1.
UHQ-CDās reproduce the sound of original master tapes as faithfully as possible by utilizing new transfer technologies and improved materials to produce high-quality sound with a better representation of the whole stage. UHQ-CDs comply with CD standards and can be played on existing players. Each title is presented in a UHQ-CD jewel case with an obi-strip and the original sleeve notes reproduced on the back inlay.
