The bluesy and soulful pianistĀ Horace ParlanĀ is perhaps best known for his work with Charles Mingus on the bassistās seminal 1959 albumsĀ Mingus Ah UmĀ andĀ Blues & Roots. That same year Parlan made his first Blue Note appearance on Lou Donaldsonās albumĀ The Time Is RightĀ and in early-1960 he began leading his own sessions for the label with a run of six quintessential hard bop dates recorded over a prolific 16-month period. Following the trio albumsĀ Movinā & GroovināĀ andĀ Us Three, Parlan expanded to a quintet for his classicĀ Speakinā My Piece, and in 1961 capped off his hot streak with the quintet albumĀ Up & Down. The 6-song set was anchored by Parlanās trusty trio with bassistĀ George TuckerĀ and drummerĀ Al HarewoodĀ and featured the two new band members in guitarist and Blue Note stalwartĀ Grant GreenĀ and brawny tenor saxophonistĀ Booker Ervin. Opening with Ervinās catchy, hard-swinging number āThe Bookās Beatā the setās other highlights include Parlanās up-tempo title tune, Tuckerās soulful blues-waltz āFugee,ā Greenās swaggering blues āThe Other Part of Town,ā and the plaintive ballad āLonely Oneā which was written by Babs Gonzales for Billie Holiday.
