The Story

J.J. JohnsonĀ adapted the language of bebop to the trombone winning the admiration of Fats Navarro, Dizzy Gillespie, and Charlie Parker. After appearing on Miles Davis’ first Blue Note session in 1952, Alfred Lion gave Johnson the chance to lead several of his own dates including a 1953 sextet date featuring trumpeterĀ Clifford Brown, saxophonistĀ Jimmy Heath, pianistĀ John Lewis, bassistĀ Percy Heath, and drummerĀ Kenny Clarke; a 1954 quintet date featuringĀ Wynton KellyĀ on piano,Ā Charles MingusĀ on bass, congueroĀ Sabu Martinez, and Clarke on drums; and a 1955 quintet date featuringĀ Hank MobleyĀ on tenor saxophone,Ā Horace SilverĀ on piano,Ā Paul ChambersĀ on bass, and Clarke once again on drums. In 1956, Blue Note transitioned from the 10ā€ to the 12ā€ LP and began the 1500 Series releasing two expanded collections of the trombonist’s recordings includingĀ The Eminent Jay Jay Johnson, Vol. 2Ā (BLP 1506).

This Blue Note Classic Vinyl Edition is mono, all-analog, mastered by Kevin Gray from the original masters, and pressed on 180g vinyl at Optimal.
