The Story

The Chicago-born pianist and composerĀ Jack WilsonĀ enjoyed a wide-range of musical associations including work with the likes ofĀ Dinah Washington,Ā Sarah Vaughan,Ā Lou Rawls,Ā Gerald Wilson,Ā Roy Ayers, and recording leader dates for Atlantic before he made his Blue Note debut in 1966 with the highly uniqueĀ Something Personal.Ā Easterly Winds—the second of Wilson’s three Blue Note albums and arguably his finest—found the pianist at the helm of a first-rate hard bop sextet withĀ Lee MorganĀ on trumpet, Garnett Brown on trombone,Ā Jackie McLeanĀ on alto saxophone,Ā Bob CranshawĀ on bass, andĀ Billy HigginsĀ on drums. The six-song set presented four Wilson originals including the groovy opener ā€œDo It" and the sublime ballad ā€œNirvannaā€ in addition to a tender rendition of theĀ Johnny MandelĀ tune ā€œA Time for Loveā€ and ā€œFrank’s Tuneā€ byĀ Frank Strozier, which was recently reimagined byĀ Makaya McCravenĀ on his 2021 Blue Note remix projectĀ Deciphering the Message.Ā
