The Story

Alto saxophonistĀ Lou DonaldsonĀ hadn’t recorded for Blue Note since 1963 when he returned to the label in 1967 and began a new chapter in his lengthy career. Sweet Papa Lou had helped lay Blue Note’s soul jazz foundation alongside Hammond B3 organists including Jimmy Smith, Baby Face Willette, and Big John Patton going back to the late-1950s thru the early-60s on standout dates including his ownĀ Here ā€˜Tis,Ā Good Gracious!, andĀ The Natural Soul. Upon his return Donaldson pushed ahead with a new hard-grooving sound on 1967’sĀ Alligator Bogaloowhich was the first of his many collaborations with organ virtuosoĀ Lonnie SmithĀ and also featured the young guitar starĀ George BensonĀ and the impossibly funky drummerĀ Leo MorrisĀ (aka Idris Muhammad). OnĀ Mr. Shing-A-LingĀ he added the bluesy trumpeterĀ Blue MitchellĀ to the mix, and for 1968’s soul jazz manifestoĀ Midnight CreeperĀ he got the whole gang back together for a greasy 6-song set including the jaunty title track, ā€œLove Power,ā€ ā€œBag of Jewels,ā€ and ā€œDapper Dan.ā€

UHQ-CD’s reproduce the sound of original master tapes as faithfully as possible by utilizing new transfer technologies and improved materials to produce high-quality sound with a better representation of the whole stage. UHQ-CDs comply with CD standards and can be played on existing players. Each title is presented in a UHQ-CD jewel case with an obi-strip and the original sleeve notes reproduced on the back inlay.
